After his championship season, Ryan went to Missouri University for three years on a baseball scholarship. He played shortstop and was a closing pitcher with a 92 mph fastball.

Ryan was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 2001 major league baseball draft. He played in the Astros system until he left baseball at the end of the 2004 season. He finished ball with the AAA team in New Orleans.

Ryan batted .299 and .353 in his last two years at MU with a slugging percentage of .603. He hit 23 home runs, had 6 triples and 36 doubles at MU.

As a pitcher at MU, he complied a record of 7 wins and 1 loss. He had 3 saves and an ERA of 3.60.

Most fans of the 1998 year have as one of their favorite moments Ryan's "Monster Dunk" in the closing seconds of the Lees Summit North game to put an exclamation point on their retaliation for the prior year's loss.

How many players have created a hair style named after them. This editor's son carried a "Stegall to the Skin" from Harvey's Barber Shop for years and many basketball players still carry their "Stegall Cuts" with pride.
